Why should you listen to me? Well, I'm going into my junior year at Central Michigan University as a Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts major with a focus on video production and writing. I'm a part of their television station and a film group, and I dream of one day being an editor or writer for some major film company. Needless to say, I have a lot of thoughts on movies. I have a lot of ambitions as a 19 year-old, and maybe some day they will happen, but until then I'm a good ole college student making my way through classes and trying to get my name out there.
But that isn't what this blog is about. This blog is about me expressing myself in a way I never have before. It ties in my two loves: film and writing.
As a young kid, I grew up watching movies, as most of us have. And as others did as children, I watched movies without realizing the change it invoked in me. There are people who grow up still not realizing the impact films make on them. As a kid, my cute and chubby little self with big glasses, I looked up to my sister. Being six years older, she dreamed of being an author (and still continues that dream today). Since I wanted to be like her, I wanted to be an author too. I wrote stories, read as many books as I could, and made my own newspaper business at home (no joke, I created 'newspapers' and put them at my family's bedroom doors in the morning).
I may be silly in saying this, but the day I went and saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with my sister and mother changed my life. As in...it changed who I wanted to be. I read the books when I was little, so of course I was excited to see the movie. From the title sequence to the rolling credits, I was captivated. Everything in that movie fascinated me, and I was so enthralled in Harry's life as he was thrown into the wizarding world and entering his first year at Hogwarts. Coming out of the movie, as all moviegoers do, we started to talk about it. I remember I kept saying how much better the movie was, mostly because I got to see everything I read come alive right before my eyes. After I said that, my sister said something along the lines of, "I thought the book was a lot better..." I will always remember her saying that, because I remember taking what she said and thinking about it overnight and how maybe I'm not meant to be an author. I felt like I was betraying my love for books by loving the movie more. And then after thinking about it some more, I finally came to the realization that movies are my passion.
Eventually when high school came around, I discovered Youtube. The first videos I saw on there were fan made ones about Final Fantasy. Yes, I'm a nerd. Let's get it out there now. I adore video games, especially the Final Fantasy series. And seeing my favorite game being put into videos that anyone could do, it inspired me to make my own. My channel TorrieG42 (check it out if you want, I have a new one now) was made and thats how I found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Video editing is exciting to me. I love the long process and putting pieces together to make something nobody has ever seen before.
And now here I am. A struggling college student with big dreams. Remember how I said I looked up to my sister? Well, years later she is still my role model. And she inspired me to create this blog. She has her own, A Literary Odyssey, where she reviews a list of classic novels. Seeing her make something out of her blog from something she loves motivated me to make my own. And thus Subjective Shot was born.
A movie is much more than moving images that keep you entertained. It's a whole other reality that you take part in. You feel what the characters are feeling, you see what they see, hear what they hear. Ever since films were created, they were there for a way for audience's to escape reality and embark on an adventure. They still do today. They captivate people's hearts.
Maybe one day I will have the chance to be able to captivate someone's heart from something I make, but until then, I will enjoy writing in Subjective Shot.
A subjective shot is a point of view shot in film. It allows the viewer to see what the character is seeing. Alfred Hitchcock, a genius who was a big fan of the subjective shot, said that the "camera takes over" when using this angle. This is my camera, and this is me showing you my thoughts through my point of view. Enjoy the journey :)
